i was the “aunt living in the spare room” for awhile myself! 3 and 5 are amazing ages for children — slightly past toddler tantrums but incredibly open and new to everything. it’s funny, i used to find children very intimidating in a strange way, and when my nieces and nephews were first born, i felt this anxiety, like how was i even going to have a conversation with them? (and what if i dropped them? ha.) but i found them incredibly fascinating, especially to see them develop their characters and personalities and watch them learn and grow. the nice thing about being an aunt or uncle is there’s so much less baggage to carry or a script to follow, but that’s why it can seem so oddly daunting. but it is definitely fun. i miss my time living with the kiddos, actually…life was certainly never dull with children around!

I love this post, thanks for sharing your experience. It’s a timely one for me – I’ve been an absentee Aunt for 2 years now, and before that I was a sporadic Aunt at best. My niece and nephew are now 3 and almost-5, and I’m going to be crashing in my brother’s spare room for the next few months. Which means I’m going to get to be an Aunt on a daily basis for the first time in my life, ever. I’m feeling anticipation/trepidation at the moment… it seems like fun, but I don’t know if I’m going to be good at it, or if the kids will even remember or like me.

do you remember me? it’s your old friend, the erstwhile “alissa” from duke. i miss you! ryan and i are working on a novel as well…skateboarding figures into it too, interestingly enough…as does nihilism, pansexuality, genderfuck, melancholy, music, etc. we also are playing music once again. i’d love to read your work and have you read ours! where are you now? we live in a lovely town in central california but we spend lots of time in hawaii(surfing, scuba diving, paragliding) as well as a not-insignificant amount of time in san francisco. i regret losing touch with you and would love to catch up.
