Listening: I am really into lovely powerful female voices lately: Ella Fitzgerald, Kimbra, Fiona Apple, Nina Simone, Joan Baez, stuff like that.
Watching: Martha Marcy May Marlene, which was pretty whoa. I really liked it, and I thought Elizabeth Olsen was great. I loved the silence, the performances (esp. by John Hawkes), the writing, the directing. It’s not a joyride of a film, for sure, but it captures your attention. Also: the Spiderman movie, which is what I expected, though Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone are a pretty appealing movie couple. I also watched Julie Taymor’s The Tempest, which I found really off-putting, though Helen Mirren is so good. I also liked Felicity Jones, and all the older Brit dudes. It’s worth watching the DVD to watch the Russell Brand rehearsal riff in the extras. That guy has too much energy, but I luff him anyway. And I enjoy Ben Whishaw in any guise, as well.
Reading: I read We Need to Talk About Kevin in one fell swoop; it was so absorbing and thought-provoking. I kept thinking about it well after I finished it. It’s one of those books where not many characters are likable, but they’re complex and intricate, and it’s such a well-told story. I also read The Newlyweds by Nell Freudenberger, which I liked.
Wearing: A pin-tucked camisole with cut-offs. I normally love my cut-offs, but I am tired of wearing them. I am never sick of pin-tucked camisoles, however.
Eating: A Chipotle veggie burrito bowl. Here’s my secret: I kinda love Chipotle. It’s like fast-casual food crack.
Wanting: A bike! Something like this, maybe:

Needing: A car. Unfortunately. Considering I’ve gone through most of adulthood without one, I guess it’s an accomplishment that I’ve avoided one all the time.
Thinking: My mind is consumed with all kinds of to-do minutiae, but I need to shift into some bigger-sky thinking soon. I hate feeling like all I do is fuss over details without a clear sense of what big picture they’re fitting into.
Dreaming: Maybe it’s the heat or maybe it’s all these intense planetary retrogrades and squares, but I have been having some really emotionally draining dreams recently.
Feeling: Fortunate, ambling along, relaxed, mellow yet restless.
Anticipating: Autumn, and all the fun things that will happen and all the things I am going to do.
Loving: Delicious lambics, the periwinkle nail polish on my toes, air conditioning, enthusiastic replies, enjoying a lovely summer evening in a Japanese garden, burying your face in someone’s chest and feeling protected.
Writing: Revising some short stories!
